Mountain Of Fun Report

ReStore and More of Salida, Habitat for Humanity in Buena Vista, and Caring and Sharing of Salida are all looking for Volunteers.  It you have a few hours to spare, and you have a heart for helping people then these organizations need you.  They are looking for volunteer help with front desk duties, answering phones, and to help answer customer questions.  If you would like to help call Gerry at ReStore and More at 207-4697 or 395-0482, Brenda at habitat for humanity in BV at 966-6004, or Bonnie at Caring and Sharing at 539-3686 or 207-0033.

The Travel Channel will air the Food Wars episode featuring the Pueblo Slopper, this Wednesday Sept. 1st at 8pm.  Gray’s Coors Tavern and The Sunset Inn competed against each other in this Food Wars episode to determine who had the best Pueblo Slopper.  That’s tonight at 8.

The 6th annual Golf Scramble is coming up to Benefit the BV Correctional Complex’s Good News jail and prison ministry.  It will be held this Friday Sept. 3rd.  Sign up now at 395-6139.  The scramble is 18 holes and includes continental breakfast starting at 7am, tee time is 8:30.  There will be prizes!

The Coaldale Community Association will be hosting a fundraising dinner this Saturday evening at 5:30 at the Coaldale School House, on Hayden Creek Road/CR 45.  Barbeque Brisket from Scanga’s will be served.  Price is $10 dollars for adults and $4 dollars for Children.  Proceeds from the dinner will go towards renovation of the Coaldale School House. 

Hi Valli Swingers Square Dance Club will host a dance on Saturday Sept. 4th at the Sargent School Cafeteria in Monte Vista.  Dancing will begin at 7pm.  For more information call 850-1303 or 852-4461.  Please bring snacks to share.

The Friends of the Leadville National Fish Hatchery is pleased to announce the release of their Trail Map.  This new map is an up to date guide to hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing trails on the Hatchery Grounds.  In addition to the Colorado and Continental Divide trails,  the map also shows an additional six trails that can be accessed from the main hatchery buildings.  The trail maps are color coded for easy reference.  The trail map is available at the Hatchery for a $1 dollar donation. 

Companies are looking to HIRE Veterans in Denver.  Over 300 veterans are expected to attend this event on Thursday Sept. 9th.  The RecruitMilitary Opportunity Expo will take place at the Wings Over The Rockies Air and Space Museum at 7711 East Academy Blvd. In Hangar one from 11am to 3pm.  Vets will be able to interview with an all star team of National, Regional, and Local Companies at the RecruitMilitary Opportunity Expo in Denver.

Colorado Legal Services will have a staff member available for case intake interviews for the Month of September, according to the following schedule:

Salida on Fridays  Sept. 3, 10, 17 and 24th from 9-11am at the Chaffee county combined courts.

Westcliffe on Wednesday Sept. 8th from 9-11am at Helping Hands on 6th Street

Fairplay on Tuesday Sept. 14th from 9-11am at the Park County Library

The Poncha Springs Community Theatre directed by Laura ReVelle Schwartz will be offering a series of Youth Theatre Workshops, with Adult workshops coming soon. There will be Friday Classes every week from 4 to 5:30 pm now thru December 10th on Fridays for Children ages 6-13. The workshop will conclude with a final, exciting performance on December 11th. Laura is thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase Poncha Springs hidden gem, their historic Stage and Theatre with theatrical opportunities for everyone. Future offerings will include Theatre for Adults, Reader’s Theatre, musicals, plays and comedies, and there is anticipation of a Poncha Springs Community Chorale. The members of First Lutheran Church started “Operation Sprit from the Heart of the Rockies” in February of 2007, and have mailed 589 boxes to date, for the military.  They continue to ask the community to submit names and addresses of service personnel currently stationed overseas.  Information may be given to Pam by calling 539-4311 between 9am and 12 noon Tuesday thru Friday.  You are also welcome to help pack boxes on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 9am.  APO addresses can also be given to Barbara at 539-3241 or Linda 539-6105. 

The City Of Salida Street Sweeping program in the Downtown Area will continue through October 29th.The Downtown area is swept from 4am until 6am.The City of Salida will ticket vehicles that are parked in sweeping zones. The street sweeping schedule is as follows: Tuesdays they will do E, F, And G Streets and Fridays they will do 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Sackett Streets.

Farmer’s and Artisan Market and Military food drive is coming up at Country Club Corners at 230 East Cheyenne Mountain Blvd in Colorado Springs.  The event will take place every Saturday from 9am to 2pm now thru Oct. 16th.  This is a drive to assist military families with necessary basic living items that many cannot afford during this time.  Give back to our military for everything they have given us.  For more information, please contact Suzanne at The Traveling Picnic Basket at 719-231-1817 or visit their website at www.thetravelingpicnicbasket.com

The Old Schoolhouse Quilters present their 12th annual quilt show, Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 2-5th at the Old Westcliffe schoolhouse at 304 South 4th Street.  Hours are 10-5 each day.  Tickets will be sold for their raffle quit, “Autumn Rhapsody”; with the drawing being held that weekend.  There will be a boutique featuring quilted and quilt related items and will be open during the show.  Some items will be for sale. 

13th annual Tenderfoot Mountain Duathlon and Triathlon and Kid’s Triathlon will be held in Salida Labor Day Weekend.  For more information on the event, or if you are interested in volunteering, contact Kristy at 539-6738.  Volunteers will receive a t-shirt, lunch, and a complimentary pass to the Aquatic Center in exchange for working a 4-5 hour shift.  Registration forms are available at the aquatic center or on-line at www.tenderfoottriathlon.com   

Save the Date!  Articipate presents their 2nd annual fundraiser:  ARTS on the ARK!  Bring the whole family out for an evening of Food, Fashion, Fun, Dance and Folly Friday, Sept. 17th at the Steamplant Ballroom and Events Center.  The Entertainment begins at 7pm.  Tickets available at the Steamplant Box Office or at the Salida Chamber of Commerce.

The 1st annual Loyal Dukes Dog Race will be held at Tenderfoot Mountain in Salida on September 18th. There will be a 3.5 mile and a 1.5 mile race beginning at 9am.  Registrations are available now at The Book Haven, Gone to the Dogs, and Pak Mail.  The race is sponsored by, the Salida Dog Club and The Boathouse Cantina. The Salida Pregnancy and Family Center announces their Walk for Life on Saturday Sept. 18th in Riverside Park.  Lunch begins at noon and the walk will officially start at 1pm.  All participants are encouraged to get sponsors for their walk.  This event is an important part of funding the work being done at the Center.  The opening of their new center at 215 east third is complete, so drop by and see the new facility at 215 east 3rd.  And remember to ask about the Walk for Life event.

Sangre De Cristo Electric is now collecting spent residential compact fluorescent light bulbs at their headquarters located at 29780 N. US Highway 24 in Buena Vista. Through a program offered by their power supplier, Tri-State Generation & Transmission, they will ship the unbroken bulbs for recycling. The mercury, glass, and metals in the ballast are all recycled. Bring your bulbs to our headquarters and they’ll do the rest.

The Ballroom Dance group gets together the 3rd Friday night of every month 7:30 - 10:00 at Hi Steppin Dance Studio at 547 Jones Street.
